Château Viale (Togo)

Weather…

Château Viale, situated on a ridge overlooking the city of Kpalimé, is one of Togo's most unusual architectural landmarks. Built in the early 1940s by Raymond Viale, a French lawyer, the structure was designed to resemble a medieval European fortress, complete with stone towers and ramparts. This unique castle stands as a striking contrast to the lush tropical vegetation of the Plateaux region. Following Togo's independence in 1960, the property was acquired by the government and has since served as an official retreat for state guests and high-level cabinet meetings. Its elevation provides sweeping panoramic views that stretch across the valley toward the Ghanaian border. While it remains a government-owned facility and internal access is often restricted for security reasons, it remains a popular site for cultural tourism and photography. The castle represents a fascinating blend of European romanticism and West African colonial history, maintained as a symbol of the nation's heritage.
