Lake Volta (Ghana)

Weather…

Lake Volta, situated in the heart of Ghana, is the world's largest man-made reservoir by surface area, covering approximately 8,502 square kilometers. It was created between 1961 and 1965 following the construction of the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River, a project central to Ghana's post-independence industrialization strategy. The formation of the lake led to the flooding of vast forested areas and the resettlement of about 78,000 people from various ethnic groups. Today, the Akosombo hydroelectric plant generates a significant portion of Ghana's electricity and supplies power to neighboring Togo and Benin. The lake functions as a critical transportation corridor linking the northern savannah regions to the southern coastal areas, facilitating trade and movement. Furthermore, it supports a massive inland fishing industry that provides livelihoods for thousands of local inhabitants. Despite environmental issues like deforestation and siltation, Lake Volta remains a vital national asset and a landmark of modern engineering in West Africa.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Lake Volta is most easily accessed via the town of Akosombo in the south, located about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive northeast of Accra. From here, regular ferry services and private boat tours are available to transport travelers to various islands and lakeside communities throughout the massive reservoir.
📅
Best season
The drier period from November to March gives the most stable conditions for boat trips and exploring the lakeside regions under clear skies. During the rainy season, water levels can rise considerably, and sudden storms may make boat crossings riskier, although the surrounding landscape is at its most lush and green.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The topography around the lake features rolling hills, savanna, and numerous small coves and islands that are often only reachable by boat. Shoreline areas can be muddy or thick with reeds, which may make docking at unofficial spots difficult and necessitates wearing sturdy footwear when heading ashore.
🎒
What to bring
Life jackets are indispensable for all boat travel, along with good sun protection, insect repellent, and lightweight clothing comfortable in high heat. If you plan to stay overnight on the islands, you should also bring a mosquito net, water purification tablets, and enough provisions for the duration of your stay.
🅿️
Parking
In Akosombo, guarded parking lots are available at the larger hotels and near the docks where many visitors leave their vehicles before boarding a boat. It is not advisable to leave your car overnight at remote shoreline spots; instead, utilize the secure parking areas provided by local tourism operators.
⚠️
Safety
Water safety is the top priority; always check the weather forecast and avoid being on the lake during strong winds or approaching storms. Swimming is only recommended in designated areas due to the risk of bilharzia and the presence of underwater obstacles or occasional crocodiles in the more remote lake arms.
⏱️
Time needed
A quick trip to the dam and a short boat ride can be done in 4 to 6 hours, but to truly experience the scale of the lake, you should plan for at least 2 to 3 days. Many visitors opt for longer ferry crossings that can take a full day to reach the more remote northern regions of Lake Volta.
