Buhleni lies in the northern Hhohho District and is one of the most important political and cultural centers of the Kingdom of Eswatini. The town hosts the Buhleni Royal Kraal, a royal residence founded by Queen Lozhitha, one of the wives of King Sobhuza II. This royal connection gives Buhleni a special status in the traditional system of the kingdom, as the place regularly hosts important ceremonies such as Lutsango lwakaNgwane (the queen's women's gathering) and national religious rituals. Economically Buhleni benefits from its position as a regional trading hub: a lively weekly market, several food stores and banks serve the surrounding communities. The climate is temperate Highveld with cool winters and warm, rainy summers, allowing cultivation of maize, beans, sweet potatoes and some fruits. In recent years Buhleni has also seen growth through new educational institutions and healthcare facilities. The region is also an important junction on the northern routes to Piggs Peak and the Maguga Dam. Overall Buhleni represents a harmonious blend of traditional monarchical culture and gradual rural modernization.
