The Maguga Dam on the Komati River is Eswatini's highest dam, standing at 115 meters, and represents one of the country's most significant engineering achievements. Completed in 2001 as part of the Komati Downstream Development Project, it serves primarily for agricultural irrigation and hydroelectric power generation via a 20-megawatt plant. The reservoir has a capacity of approximately 332 million cubic meters of water and covers an area of about 1,000 hectares within a rugged mountainous landscape. The structure is a clay-core rockfill dam, specifically designed to withstand extreme flood events that occur in the region. Beyond its economic utility, the area around the dam has developed into a hub for ecotourism and recreational activities. The project was a bilateral cooperation between Eswatini and South Africa to ensure the sustainable management of water resources in the border region.

Getting there
Maguga Dam is easily reached via a well-maintained paved loop road that connects directly to the MR1 highway in northern Eswatini. The approach provides excellent scenic driving with clearly signposted viewpoints along the way.
Best season
The reservoir can be visited comfortably year-round, though the spring and summer months provide the most animated green landscapes. Winter mornings can be quite brisk, but the crisp air has excellent long-distance visibility.
Terrain & paths
The environment features a massive concrete dam wall set against steep, rolling green hills and deep river valleys. The walking areas near the viewpoints and the dam wall are generally flat, paved, and fully accessible to most.
What to bring
Standard, comfortable casual clothing is perfectly adequate for a standard sightseeing visit. If you plan to take a boat tour or hike the rougher trails around the lake perimeter, a hat and light walking shoes are recommended.
Parking
There is a dedicated, structured parking area situated near the main viewpoint and visitor center. It is generally secure and can easily accommodate standard cars, minibuses, and larger touring vehicles during peak hours.
Safety
Stay behind all safety railings when viewing the dam wall, as the drops are precipitous. While the water looks inviting, swimming is typically prohibited due to potential underwater currents and local water regulations.
Time needed
A standard visit simply to see the engineering structure and take photographs usually lasts around one to two hours. Visitors often extend their stay to half a day by enjoying a meal at the adjacent viewpoint restaurant or taking a boat ride.
