Havelock, today largely synonymous with the Bulembu complex in the far northwest of Eswatini, was in the 20th century one of southern Africa's most important mining centers. The Havelock Asbestos Mine, founded in 1939 by the South African company New Amianthus Mines, was at its peak the largest chrysotile asbestos mine in the world. A spectacular 20-kilometer aerial cableway carried asbestos from Havelock directly to the South African town of Barberton, an engineering feat still impressive today. At its peak the mine employed more than 6,000 workers and gave the town an almost European atmosphere with schools, churches, hospital, hotel and sports facilities. After the closure in 2001 the town became a ghost town until it was revitalized by Bulembu Ministries as a social and renewal project. Today Havelock/Bulembu has developed into a model of sustainable tourism, ecological agriculture and orphan care. The climate is unusually cool for Africa, with occasional winter frost and snow. The surrounding Makonjwa Mountains are among the oldest geological formations on Earth and offer dramatic hiking in an almost alpine landscape. Havelock thus tells an extraordinary story: from industrial rise through abrupt decline to socially sustainable rebirth.
