Balegana lies in the northeastern Hhohho District, set in fertile middle country with rich soils and access to several rivers, including the Komati and the Mbuluzi. Since the 2000s the region has developed strongly through the Lower Komati Smallholder Irrigation Project and complementary schemes, canals, pumping stations and small reservoirs now allow intensive irrigated farming that was previously impossible. The plantations around Balegana mainly grow bananas, mangoes, citrus, avocados and macadamia nuts. The macadamia sector in particular has grown strongly in recent years, with Eswatini rising into the global top 15 producers of this high-value nut. Maize, beans and small-scale vegetable crops are also grown for the local market. The climate is mild, rainy middle Highveld. Balegana is also a culturally diverse community where traditional Swazi customs coexist with influences from the Mozambican border region. Residents often organize in cooperatives offering training, market access and microcredit. Balegana thus exemplifies how rural areas in Eswatini are experiencing economic uplift through irrigation, diversification and cooperative structures.
