Malolotja Falls (Eswatini)

Weather…

The Malolotja Falls are located within the Malolotja Nature Reserve in northwestern Eswatini and are recognized as the highest waterfalls in the country, with a drop of 95 meters. They are situated in a rugged highland region characterized by deep gorges and granite peaks. Geologically, the area is part of the Barberton Mountains, containing some of the oldest rock formations on the planet. The falls are formed by the Malolotja River as it plunges over the edge of the African plateau toward the lower-lying Lowveld. Historically, the surrounding area was utilized for mining, particularly at the nearby Ngwenya Mine, before the reserve was established in 1972. The climate at this altitude is significantly cooler than the rest of the country, supporting unique alpine flora. Today, Malolotja serves as a critical sanctuary for endangered species such as the Wattled Crane and the rare Southern Bald Ibis colony.
