Piggs Peak lies in the northwestern Hhohho District at around 1,200 meters elevation in the forested mountains of northern Eswatini and is the most important town of the northern Highveld. Its unusual name comes from the French gold prospector William Pigg, who discovered a gold reef here in 1884 and triggered the kingdom's first gold rush. The gold mine was worked until 1954, after which the economic focus shifted to forestry, especially the extensive pine and eucalyptus plantations now owned by Peak Timbers. The town itself has about 7,000 inhabitants and hosts a number of government offices, a clinic, schools and the traditional Phophonyane Falls Lodge just outside town. Surrounding it are some of Eswatini's most spectacular natural attractions: the dramatic Phophonyane Falls with their 80-meter drop, the Maguga Dam on the Komati River, and the Malolotja Nature Reserve, home to endemic plants such as the Barberton daisy. The region is also culturally significant: nearby are Khoisan rock paintings up to 4,000 years old, offering a glimpse of the earliest human settlement in southern Africa.
