Croydon is a small rural settlement in the eastern Manzini District whose name dates back to the British colonial era and recalls an English suburb. The region was cultivated in the early 20th century by European settlers as farmland, mainly for cattle ranching and maize. Today Croydon is a quiet, rural community where traditional Swazi and colonial-historical influences meet. Economically the residents' lives rest on subsistence farming, maize, beans, sweet potatoes and sorghum are the main crops. Cattle and poultry farming also play important roles. The region is crossed by gentle hills, acacia woodlands and small streams, making it scenically attractive. The climate is temperate middle Highveld with warm summers and cool winters. Croydon has a primary school, a small clinic and a weekly market where farmers sell their produce. Despite its modest size Croydon is an important hub for the surrounding communities and represents a traditional, quiet way of life that is becoming rarer in growing, modernizing Eswatini. Hikers and nature lovers appreciate the area for its quiet beauty.
