Zavala Monastery (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Zavala Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located on the southwestern edge of Popovo Polje in Herzegovina. Its exact origins are debated; while local tradition attributes its founding to Emperor Constantine, the first reliable written records date back to 1514. The monastery's architecture is unique because the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin is partially built into a natural cave, with the northern wall formed by the cliffside itself. This rock-integrated structure provided natural protection against invaders for centuries. Inside, the church houses magnificent frescoes painted in 1619 by the renowned artist Georgij Mitrofanović, considered masterpieces of post-Byzantine art. Throughout its history, the monastery has been destroyed several times, most recently during the 1990s conflict, but was fully restored by 2000. It is currently a protected National Monument and a site of profound spiritual significance.
