Svrzo's House (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Svrzo's House (Svrzina kuća) in Sarajevo is an outstanding and impeccably preserved architectural gem that provides a profound insight into the lifestyle of a wealthy Muslim family during the Ottoman era in Bosnia. Constructed in the 18th century, the estate is one of the very few surviving examples of traditional urban residential culture from that period. Adhering to the strict social norms of the time, the house is architecturally divided into two distinct quarters: the selamluk (the public area designated for men and receiving guests) and the haremluk (the heavily protected, intimate living space for women and the immediate family). The construction technique is particularly fascinating, as the building is made almost entirely from natural, regional materials such as untreated wood, adobe brick, and stone. The idyllic inner courtyards, shaded wooden verandas (divanhana), intricate wood carvings, traditional kilim rugs, and fine copper vessels collectively create an atmosphere of timeless elegance. Today, the carefully restored house serves as an annex of the Museum of Sarajevo, allowing visitors to step back in time directly into the 18th century.
