Prokoško Lake (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Prokoško Lake is a glacial lake located on Vranica Mountain in Central Bosnia, situated at an altitude of 1,635 meters above sea level. Formed during the last ice age, the lake is surrounded by high mountain peaks that create a natural bowl-shaped landscape. A unique biological feature of the lake is the presence of the endemic Triton salamander (Ichthyosaura alpestris reiseri), a subspecies of the alpine newt that is native only to these waters. The surrounding area is dotted with traditional shepherd huts known as 'katuns', built from wood and stone, reflecting the cultural heritage of the region. Due to its alpine location, the vegetation is characterized by high-altitude plants and rare herbs that grow on the surrounding pastures. In recent decades, the lake has been designated a natural monument to protect the delicate ecosystem from human impact. Despite its isolation, it remains a significant research site for limnologists and biologists. The water quality and levels are directly influenced by snowmelt and precipitation from the Vranica massif.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The lake is best accessed in late spring and summer, when snowmelt is complete and water temperatures rise. The endemic alpine newts are most active during this time and easily observed.
🌅
Best time of day
The newts are most active in early morning and late afternoon, when they forage in the shallow water. Avoid the midday heat, as they typically retreat to deeper zones then.
📜
Etiquette
Do not catch newts or disturb their habitat - the species is strictly protected. Avoid throwing stones or stirring up the water, as this damages the sensitive spawning sites.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof shoes or rubber boots help you get close to the shoreline. Snorkeling gear can be useful to observe newts underwater without disturbing them.
🧭
Getting there
Prokoško Lake is reached by a hike from the Vranica mountain hut, which can be accessed by car up to a certain point. The trail is steep and rocky, requiring sure-footedness.
🦌
What to expect
Newts are small and well-camouflaged - systematically scan the shallow, vegetated shore areas. Sit quietly by the water and wait for them to reappear.
