💡 Tips
- The road from Fojnica is unpaved and rugged for the last 15-20 kilometers; a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended.
- There is no electricity or mobile signal at the lake; bring power banks and prepare for a genuine off-grid experience.
- Pay the small entry fee at the ramp with cash, and expect to pay local families in cash for any food or accommodation.
- Please respect the fragile ecosystem and do not swim in the lake, as it is a protected habitat for the endemic triton.
🍽 Food
Order a traditional meat or cheese pie cooked slowly under a metal lid with embers, prepared by the locals right at the katuni.
Taste the robust, locally produced sheep cheese (ovčiji sir), a staple of the shepherds' diet.
Enjoy the rustic, thick-crusted bread baked in wood-fired ovens by the host families.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
During late summer, buy fresh blueberries and raspberries picked directly from the surrounding mountain slopes.
Purchase thick, cozy woolen garments made by local women using traditional techniques.
Hike up the gentle grassy slopes behind the wooden huts for a panoramic, quiet view of the entire village and lake.
Follow the trail towards the peak of Nadkrstac for absolute solitude and sweeping views of central Bosnia.
Water temperature…
Prokoško Lake on Mount Vranica is frequently cited as the most beautiful alpine lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Perched at 1,636 meters above sea level, it provides a fairytale setting with its clear glacial waters surrounded by traditional wooden shepherd dwellings called 'katuni'. In these huts, visitors can still experience authentic highland hospitality, tasting homemade bread and mountain cheese. The lake is a protected natural monument, partly because it is the habitat of the endemic Triton (amphibian). Reaching the lake is an adventure, requiring a journey up a long gravel road from Fojnica, best suited for 4x4 vehicles. Once there, the lack of modern infrastructure allows for a total escape into nature. It is a premier destination for hikers, nature photographers, and anyone looking to witness a centuries-old way of life in an impressive high-altitude environment.
