Klobuk Fortress
Klobuk Fortress is one of the oldest and most historically significant defensive structures in the Herzegovina region, located about 50 kilometers east of Trebinje. It perches on a prominent, steep peak and for centuries controlled the vital trade route from the Adriatic coast to Montenegro. The fortress's origins date back to the 10th century, having been mentioned by Constantine Porphyrogenitus. During the Middle Ages, Klobuk was an important stronghold for the Bosnian noble families Pavlović and Kosača before it was captured by the Ottomans in 1477. The Ottomans significantly expanded the fortress and used it as a frontier outpost against the Venetians and Montenegrins. Today, the ruins still display massive walls, towers, and cisterns that testify to its former defensive strength. In 1878, Klobuk was the site of fierce resistance against the Austro-Hungarian occupation, during which the fortress suffered heavy damage. Despite its state of ruin, it remains an impressive witness to the region's turbulent history.
