Tvrdoš Monastery (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Tvrdoš Monastery is a significant Serbian Orthodox monastery located near the city of Trebinje in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Legend attributes its founding to the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and his mother Helena, though the current foundations date back to the 15th century. For centuries, the monastery served as the cultural and spiritual hub of the region and was once the seat of the Metropolitans of Herzegovina. Tvrdoš is internationally renowned for its long-standing winemaking tradition, with monks producing award-winning wines in ancient stone cellars that date back to the 15th century. The monastery church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God and houses precious frescoes and the hand relic of Saint Helena. Despite being destroyed multiple times throughout history, the monastery was always rebuilt and remains a major pilgrimage site and a highlight of the Herzegovinian wine route.
