Dechen Phodrang Monastery (Bhutan)

Weather…

Dechen Phodrang Monastery, whose name translates to Palace of Great Happiness, is situated at the northern end of Bhutan's capital, Thimphu. Founded in the 12th century, this site originally served as the location for Thimphu's first dzong, the Tashichho Dzong, before it was moved to its current riverside location. Since 1971, the complex has functioned as a state monastic school, serving as one of Bhutan's most important educational centers for young novices. Currently, around 450 student monks live and study here, undergoing an eight-year course in Buddhist rituals and philosophy. The monastery houses significant historical artifacts, including 12th-century paintings that are strictly protected as national treasures. The upper chapel features an impressive statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, while the lower chapel is dedicated to the monastery's protective deities, reflecting the site's deep spiritual and historical roots.
