National Memorial Chorten (Bhutan)

Weather…

The National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu is one of Bhutan's most iconic religious landmarks and a central focus of daily worship for the city's residents. It was constructed in 1974 in memory of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is widely regarded as the father of modern Bhutan. The initiative for the build came from his mother, Ashi Phuntsho Choden, to fulfill the king's posthumous wish for a monument dedicated to world peace. Unlike other stupas, this chorten does not contain the king's remains but serves as a symbolic spiritual center for prayer and meditation. The architecture follows the classical Tibetan style of a chörten, adorned with golden spires and intricate stone carvings. Inside, it features detailed statues and elaborate murals representing the tantric teachings of the Nyingma tradition. From dawn until dusk, devotees of all ages circumambulate the stupa in a clockwise direction, spinning the large prayer wheels at the entrance. The chorten stands as a living symbol of the Bhutanese people's deep-rooted faith and their profound respect for the monarchy.
