Synkavichy Fortified Church (Belarus)

Weather…

The Synkavichy Fortified Church (Church of St. Michael the Archangel) is one of the most remarkable monuments of Belarusian Gothic architecture. The exact date of its construction is debated, but historians mostly date it to the early 15th century. The structure fascinatingly combines sacred and defensive elements: the massive brick walls, up to one and a half meters thick, and the four round corner towers give it the appearance of an impregnable small fortress. In the upper part of the facade, there is a defensive gallery with numerous loopholes. The church was built to provide shelter for the local population during frequent military raids. Over the centuries, the building experienced several confessional changes between Orthodoxy and Catholicism and survived numerous wars. Today, it is an active Orthodox church and attracts architecture enthusiasts from all over Europe with its unique design that breathes the harsh character of the Middle Ages.
