The Minsk Upper Town (Vierchni Horad) is the undisputed historical center of the Belarusian capital, which took shape after a devastating fire in the 16th century. In contrast to the rest of the city, which was almost completely destroyed during World War II, this district, with its carefully restored buildings, provides a glimpse into the atmosphere of old Minsk. The focal point is Liberty Square, dominated by the City Hall, faithfully rebuilt in 2004, which was originally erected in 1582 after Minsk received Magdeburg city rights. It is also home to significant religious sites such as the majestic Holy Spirit Cathedral, built in the 17th century in the Sarmatian Baroque style as a Catholic monastery, and the Catholic Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. The narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with former merchant houses that today host museums, galleries, cozy cafes, and souvenir shops, making the Upper Town the cultural hub of the city.
