Dzyarzhynsk, located approximately 30 kilometers southwest of the capital, Minsk, is a rapidly developing industrial city carrying significant historical and political symbolism. Until 1932, the settlement bore the historic name Koydanava, but it was renamed in honor of Feliks Dzerzhinsky, the infamous founder of the Soviet secret police (Cheka), who was born on a nearby estate. The modern city is tightly integrated into the Minsk metropolitan area; its excellent transportation links have made it an attractive hub for mechanical engineering, light industry, and logistics. Dzyarzhynsk also has a notable geographic distinction: just outside the city lies Dzyarzhynskaya Hara (Dzerzhinskaya Hill), which, at 345 meters above sea level, is the highest natural point in the otherwise uniformly flat country of Belarus.
