Smarhon is a city in northwestern Belarus whose historical fame rests on a highly unusual institution: the 'Smarhon Bear Academy.' Established in the 17th century by the powerful Radziwiłł noble family, it was a unique facility where bears were captured, trained, and sold to circuses and wandering performers across Europe. Beyond this fascinating legacy, the city also claims to be the birthplace of the bagel, which was purportedly first baked here in the 17th century. Smarhon suffered near-total destruction during World War I, as the frontline remained stalled here for years, leaving the surrounding landscape scarred with bunkers and trenches that stand as solemn memorials. Modern Smarhon is a hub for optical instruments and machinery manufacturing, centered around the striking architecture of St. Michael’s Church.
