Kamyanyets Tower (Belarus)

Weather…

The Kamyanyets Tower is the only surviving example of a medieval donjon in Belarus and a symbol of national architecture. It was built between 1271 and 1289 by order of Prince Vladimir Vasilkovich to protect the western borders of the Galicia-Volhynia Principality. The tower stands 30 meters high with 2.5-meter-thick walls made of red brick. Despite its popular name 'Belaya Vezha' (White Tower), historically it was never painted white; the name likely stems from a misinterpretation of local chronicles, yet it became so popular that it even lent its name to the nearby primeval forest. Today, the tower houses a branch of the Brest Regional Museum. Across five floors, it showcases exhibits on medieval warfare, archaeology, and the town's history. The highlight for visitors is the observation deck on the roof, offering a wide view over the town and the distant tree line of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha forest. The tower has withstood numerous sieges by Crusaders, Mongols, and Poles over the centuries without ever being taken by force. Located about 40 km north of Brest, it is ideally combined with a visit to the nearby national park. The best time to visit is late spring when the surrounding landscape is spirited and green.
