Soligorsk is one of the youngest and most economically animated cities in Belarus, built entirely from scratch in the late 1950s following the discovery of massive potash salt deposits in the region. The city’s layout is a textbook example of Soviet-era master planning, featuring wide grids of streets, functional residential micro-districts, and broad squares. The undisputed lifeblood of the city is the state-owned enterprise Belaruskali, one of the world’s largest producers of potash fertilizers, which employs a significant portion of the local population. To balance the heavy industrial focus, the artificial Soligorsk Reservoir was created on the Sluch River, providing residents with a popular recreational and leisure spot. The outskirts of the city are defined by surreal, Martian-like landscapes of massive red-and-white artificial mountains, created from the mining waste over decades.
