Barakah Nuclear Power Plant (United Arab Emirates)

Weather…

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is the first commercial nuclear facility in the Arab world and a cornerstone of the UAE's strategy for clean energy transition. Located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, approximately 53 kilometers west of Ruwais, the plant consists of four APR-1400 pressurized water reactors of South Korean design. The project is the centerpiece of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program, aimed at significantly diversifying the nation's energy mix and reducing its carbon footprint by millions of tons annually. Once all four units are fully operational, the plant will generate 5.6 gigawatts of electricity, meeting approximately 25% of the UAE's total power demand. Construction commenced in 2012, with Unit 1 entering commercial service in 2020. Barakah is recognized globally as a benchmark for new nuclear builds, adhering to the highest international safety and transparency standards set by the IAEA. Beyond power generation, it fosters a new generation of Emirati nuclear scientists and engineers.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
Situated in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, this monumental facility is the first commercial nuclear power station in the Arab world, representing a massive shift toward sustainable energy in the Emirates.
🚪
Visiting
For stringent security and safety reasons, the entire nuclear complex is heavily restricted and completely closed to public tours, serving strictly as a highly secured industrial and scientific environment.
👀
Where to view it
While close approach is impossible, travellers driving along the remote coastal highways of the Al Dhafra region can occasionally spot the massive containment domes rising distantly against the desert skyline.
🧺
Local products
The immediate vicinity is extremely barren and highly industrialized, so visitors should not expect local markets; instead, provisions and local Emirati crafts are best found in towns further along the highway.
📆
Active season
Energy generation occurs relentlessly throughout the year, but the surrounding desert landscape is much more hospitable for travellers choosing to drive through the region during the cooler winter months.
Nearby
Observing this modern engineering marvel from afar pairs beautifully with exploring the pristine beaches of the Western Region and experiencing the vast, uninterrupted sand dunes of the Empty Quarter further inland.
