Byaroza, a significant industrial city in the Brest Region, conceals a deeply complex and fascinating history behind its modern exterior. The city's name translates to 'Birch,' reflecting the dense, characteristic woodlands of the surrounding area. The undisputed historical centerpiece of Byaroza is the imposing ruins of the Carthusian Monastery, founded in the 17th century. In its prime, this complex was one of the largest and wealthiest monastic estates in Eastern Europe, complete with a library, hospital, and massive defensive walls, before being largely dismantled in the 19th century by Russian authorities. In the 20th century, the city gained notoriety due to the Bereza Kartuska internment camp operated by the Second Polish Republic in the 1930s. Today, Byaroza is a thriving hub for the building materials and food industries, powered by a large local power plant.
