💡 Tips
- The lake water is exceptionally clear but drops off quite deep quickly, so be cautious when swimming.
- Parking is located a short walk from the lake to preserve the ecological zone.
- Bring your own snacks and drinks, as on-site infrastructure is minimal outside the peak summer season.
- Walking the entire perimeter trail takes about 2-3 hours and is highly recommended.
🍽 Food
Stop at a grocery store in Novogrudok before arriving to pick up local cheeses, bread, and smoked meats for a lakeside picnic.
During summer weekends, look for small pop-up vendors near the main beach selling grilled meat skewers.
In late summer, locals often sell freshly foraged blueberries and raspberries along the roads leading to the lake.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
In early autumn, you can buy jars of locally pickled or dried forest mushrooms from roadside vendors near the nature reserve.
While not at the lake itself, the nearby town of Novogrudok sells beautiful editions of poetry inspired by Svityaz.
Seek out the massive, ancient oak trees along the forest paths, offering deep shade and a sense of history.
Walk away from the main parking area to the eastern side of the lake to find secluded, sandy clearings first-rate for reading.

Lake Svityaz is one of the most beautiful and mysterious lakes in Belarus, located in the Navahrudak district. It is famous for its nearly circular shape and exceptionally clear water. The lake has no visible surface inlets or outlets, being fed exclusively by underground springs, which helps maintain its purity. Its white sandy bottom and gently sloping shores make it a popular swimming destination, even though it lies within a protected nature reserve where motorboats are strictly prohibited. The lake is deeply intertwined with Belarusian and Polish culture. The famous poet Adam Mickiewicz dedicated several ballads to the lake, recounting the legend of a sunken city whose inhabitants chose to turn into flowers rather than surrender to invaders. These flowers, rare water lobelias, actually still grow in the lake today. For travelers, Lake Svityaz provides a peaceful atmosphere away from mass tourism. There are designated camping sites and hiking trails through the dense broad-leaved forest that surrounds the water like an emerald ring. The best time to visit is mid-summer for swimmers or early autumn for hikers. It is best reached from the towns of Navahrudak or Baranovichi.
