Baranovichi Plain (Belarus)

Weather…

The Baranovichi Plain in central Belarus is a geographically distinct flatland that broadly surrounds the city of Baranovichi. With elevations varying almost constantly between 180 and 200 meters, this region is among the smoothest and flattest non-marshy landscapes in the country. Originating from the ground moraines of earlier Ice Ages, these deposits have been almost perfectly leveled by millennia of continuous erosion. What particularly distinguishes the Baranovichi Plain is the exceptional quality of its soils. Dark, humus-rich loamy soils, which locally resemble chernozems (black earth), provide optimal conditions for arable farming. For this reason, the region has been almost entirely deforested; the current forest cover stands at less than 15 percent. Today, the plain is a vast, uninterrupted agricultural landscape where grain, flax, and potatoes are cultivated on a massive scale. The few remaining natural landscape elements are concentrated along the shallow valleys of the Shchara River and its minor tributaries.
