Navahrudak Mosque (Belarus)

Weather…

The Navahrudak Mosque is a rare and significant example of wooden Islamic architecture in Belarus, reflecting the long-standing presence of the Lipka Tatar community. Tatars were invited to settle in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as early as the 14th century, and Navahrudak emerged as one of their primary religious hubs. The current wooden structure was built in 1855 on the site of a predecessor dating back to the 16th century. Its architectural style is a unique fusion of local Belarusian vernacular woodworking and traditional Islamic features, including a central minaret and a distinctive mihrab inside. During the Soviet period, the mosque was closed to worshipers, its minaret was removed, and the building was repurposed as residential housing and later for commercial use. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the building was returned to the Tatar community and underwent extensive restoration before reopening in 1997. Today, it stands as one of the few surviving wooden mosques in the country and serves as a testament to the enduring cultural and religious pluralism of Navahrudak.
