Brest Fortress (Belarus)

Weather…

The Brest Fortress, constructed in the 19th century at the confluence of the Western Bug and Mukhavets rivers, is a monumental symbol of Soviet endurance. The original structure was built between 1833 and 1842 to serve as a western outpost for the Russian Empire. The site achieved worldwide fame in June 1941 when a small Soviet garrison heroically resisted the advancing German Wehrmacht troops for several weeks. In honor of these events, the fortress was awarded the title Hero Fortress in 1965. The current memorial complex, opened in 1971, features colossal Soviet sculptures, including the 33-meter-tall main monument Courage, a large ceremonial square, and the ruins of the barracks. The St. Nicholas Garrison Church, located on the grounds and built in the mid-19th century, has also been restored.
