The Berestye Archaeological Museum in Brest is a globally unique site that preserves the remnants of a 13th-century East Slavic wooden town. Discovered in 1968 during excavations within the grounds of the Brest Fortress, the site revealed an entire residential quarter with exceptionally well-preserved log cabins. The waterlogged, swampy soil conditions acted as a natural preservative for the wood for over 700 years, making it an extraordinary find in European archaeology. In 1982, a massive glass and concrete pavilion was erected over the excavation site, creating a climate-controlled environment to protect the 28 unearthed structures. From elevated walkways, visitors can observe the layout of medieval streets and the intricate construction of the dwellings, gaining direct insight into 13th-century urban planning. The museum displays over 43,000 artifacts, including leather goods, tools, and jewelry, illustrating the sophisticated craftsmanship of the period. It remains the only museum of its kind in Europe and is a vital destination for understanding the medieval roots of the Belarusian people.
