David Gareja Monastery (Georgia)

Weather…

David Gareja is a vast, rock-hewn Georgian Orthodox monastery complex situated in the Gareja semi-desert, roughly 60 kilometers southeast of Tbilisi. The site was founded in the 6th century by David Garejeli, one of the thirteen Syrian Fathers who arrived in Georgia to strengthen the Christian faith. The complex stretches for several kilometers along the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan and comprises 15 distinct monasteries, including Lavra and Udabno. Hundreds of individual monk cells, churches, chapels, and refectories were carved directly into the soft sandstone slopes over many centuries. The Udabno monastery is particularly renowned for its exceptional 9th to 13th-century frescoes, which depict biblical narratives and portraits of Georgian monarchs like Queen Tamar. Despite suffering from invasions by Mongols and Persians, and being used as a military training ground during the Soviet era, the site remains a major spiritual center. Its unique combination of cave architecture and desert landscape makes it one of Georgia's most significant cultural landmarks.
