Goyazan Mountain (Göyəzən) is a spectacular volcanic monolith located in the Qazakh District of northwestern Azerbaijan, near the border with Armenia. Rising to an elevation of 858 meters above sea level and standing about 250 meters above the surrounding plain, it forms a striking, isolated rock formation near the village of Abbasbeyli. Geologically, the mountain is a volcanic neck or plug, exposed over millions of years as the surrounding softer rocks eroded away. At the base of the mountain lie the ruins of a medieval fortress dating back to the 14th century, which once played a strategic military role overlooking the Kura River valley. Reaching this striking volcanic remnant usually involves a drive through the rural plains of western Azerbaijan. From the nearby villages, local dirt trails lead directly to the base of the solitary peak.
