Gurjaani, with around 9,000 inhabitants, is one of the most important winemaking centres in the heart of Georgia's eastern Kakheti region, set on a fertile terrace between the foothills of the Gombori range and the Alazani Valley. The town's name probably derives from the Persian Gurjistan (land of the Georgians) and has been documented since the Middle Ages as a market and trading hub. Today it hosts numerous traditional large wineries as well as the prestigious Research Institute for Viticulture and Oenology, which documents and develops the ancient kvevri method of fermenting wine in clay amphorae, listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. The region's iconic native grapes, Saperavi, Rkatsiteli and Kindzmarauli, are crafted here into dry, semi-sweet and naturally sweet wines. Architecturally, the 8th, 9th-century Kvelatsminda Church stands out as the only Georgian church with two small domes. Nearby attractions include the Bodbe Monastery, birthplace of Saint Nino, the spa town of Akhtala and the Vasiskhviri Nature Reserve with its ancient oak forests.
