Goychay, whose name translates roughly as Blue River, lies on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus about two hundred and fifty kilometres west of Baku and is the unofficial pomegranate capital of Azerbaijan. More than twenty pomegranate varieties, including the famous Gulosha cultivar, are grown in the fertile region surrounding the town. Since 2006, every October or early November, the spectacular pomegranate festival Nar Bayrami has been held here, attracting Azerbaijani and international visitors who taste juices, wines and the sweet-and-sour narsharab sauce. The town itself has around forty thousand inhabitants, a modern cannery, a historical local museum and a pomegranate monument in the Art Nouveau-style Mehraliyev Park. Traditional silkworm breeding is still practised in many of the surrounding villages.
