Ismayilli State Reserve (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Ismayilli State Reserve was established in 1981 to preserve and study the diverse natural complexes of the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. Spanning approximately 16,740 hectares, the reserve encompasses a vertical range of habitats, from dense broad-leaved forests to high-altitude subalpine and alpine meadows. The vegetation is dominated by beech, oak, and hornbeam trees, providing a stable environment for numerous rare and endemic plant species. The reserve is a critical sanctuary for the Caucasian tur, as well as brown bears, wolves, and lynxes. It also plays a vital role in regional hydrology, protecting the headwaters of several key rivers that flow through the Ismayilli district. Ongoing scientific research in the area focuses on biodiversity monitoring and the protection of endangered species in mountainous terrains. Due to its strict protection status, the reserve remains largely untouched by human interference, preserving the primordial beauty of the Caucasian wilderness. It is also an important site for large birds of prey, such as the golden eagle and griffon vulture, which nest in the inaccessible rocky cliffs.
