Mount Tufandag is an imposing peak in the Greater Caucasus with an elevation of 4,191 meters, located in the Gabala District. Its name translates to 'Storm Mountain,' indicating the frequent and violent weather shifts encountered at this high altitude. The mountain is part of the Shahdag massif and is characterized by its rugged ridges and permanent snowfields. The northern slopes contain small glacial remnants that are crucial for the water supply of local river systems. Historically, the region at the base of Tufandag was the heart of ancient Caucasian Albania, adding a unique cultural layer to the landscape. In recent decades, the development of the Tufandag Mountain Resort has turned the area into a premier tourist destination, popular for skiing in winter and trekking in summer. The flora on its slopes ranges from dense beech forests to alpine tundra at the highest elevations. The mountain serves as an important habitat for the Caucasian grouse and other rare bird species.

The city of Qabala serves as the primary gateway, with cable cars providing access to the higher elevations. Experienced climbers often reach the upper slopes via hiking trails starting from the lower valleys.

Mid-summer is the most suitable time for hiking, though weather remains volatile. In winter, the region transforms into a ski resort, but the highest peak areas are often inaccessible due to extreme storms.

The terrain is high-alpine, steep, and rocky, especially above the tree line. Hikers should expect scree slopes and, in the summit regions, snow patches or icy passages even during the summer months.

What to bring

High-altitude gear is required, including sturdy mountaineering boots and weatherproof layering. For summit attempts, crampons and trekking poles are often necessary to safely navigate the difficult terrain.
