Old Gabala Ruins (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The ruins of Old Gabala mark the site of the former capital of ancient Caucasian Albania, which flourished for over 600 years. The city was founded as early as the 4th century BC and was strategically located on the Silk Road, which brought it significant prosperity through trade. Archaeological excavations have unearthed impressive remains of monumental city gates, defensive walls, and complex irrigation systems. Despite numerous invasions by the Romans, Sassanids, and Arabs, Gabala remained an important urban center until its destruction by the Mongols in the 13th century. Today, the excavation site covers an area of about 25 hectares and continuously provides new insights into the social and economic life of the ancient region. Visitors can view the massive brick walls and foundations of palace buildings that reflect the former splendor of this ancient metropolis.
