At an elevation of 2,350 meters, Khinalug is the highest continuously inhabited village in Azerbaijan. The settlement is over 5,000 years old and consists of about 380 terraced houses built from local cobblestone, where the roof of one house serves as the patio for the one above it. The 2,000 residents are an distinct ethnic group who speak the unique Khinalug language, entirely different from Azerbaijani, and practice a traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle. The village is completely surrounded by the treeless, high-altitude peaks of the Greater Caucasus, including the 4,243-meter Mount Shahdag. The terrain is harsh and alpine, characterized by steep ravines and rocky slopes. The local diet is heavily reliant on sheep breeding, featuring strong mountain cheeses, thick mutton broths, and locally gathered herbs used for tea. Reaching Khinalug requires a 50-kilometer drive from the city of Quba along a dramatic, narrow, and steep mountain dirt road. A sturdy 4x4 vehicle and an experienced local driver are essential for this journey. Access is highly weather-dependent; the road is often entirely blocked by snow from November to April, making summer the only reliable time to visit.
