💡 Tips
- The spectacular Palace of Shaki Khans strictly forbids photography inside to protect the frescoes; simply enjoy it with your own eyes.
- Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes; the historic center features steep climbs and uneven cobblestone streets.
- You can actually dine or drink tea inside the courtyard of the historic Upper Caravanserai for a truly unique, atmospheric experience.
- To avoid the large tour groups, visit the main fortress area and the Khans' Palace right when they open in the morning.
- The local dialect is quite different from Baku, and the town's mountainous setting means evenings can be surprisingly cool.
🍽 Food
A slow-cooked lamb and chickpea stew in a clay pot. Eat it locally: drink the broth first with bread, then mash the rest.
An incredibly sweet local pastry made of thin layers of dough, nuts, and syrup, sold in specialty shops on the main street.
Enjoy traditional black tea subtly flavored with rose water at the tea houses in the old town.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the workshops or shops near the factory to buy authentic Kelaghayi (traditional silk headscarves).
Look for craftsmen inside the fortress walls creating intricate stained glass windows without glue or nails.
Pick up boxes of Shaki Halva from the bustling confectioneries-it's the absolute best local souvenir.
A short drive outside the city, this peaceful orchard and farm is first-rate for a quiet afternoon.
Often much quieter and less crowded than the main Khans' Palace, offering beautiful details in peace.
Hike the paths just above the city for tranquil nature and panoramic views of Shaki.

Sheki rises amphitheatrically along the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus at around seven hundred metres altitude and is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Azerbaijan. Its historic old town, with cobblestone lanes, domed bathhouses and caravanserais more than two hundred years old, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. The emblem of the city is the eighteenth-century Summer Palace of the Sheki Khans, whose façade is decorated with delicate Shebeke windows, stained-glass mosaics held in wooden lattices assembled without nails or glue, and frescoes depicting hunting scenes. Sheki was a major Silk Road stop; traditional silk, ceremonial goblets and the famous sweet halva are still produced here following age-old recipes. In summer the nearby forests of Kish and Khan Yaylagi plateau provide refreshing coolness.
