Hohensalzburg Fortress (Austria)

Weather…

Hohensalzburg Fortress is the landmark of the city of Salzburg, perched on the Festungsberg above the Old Town. It was built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Controversy to protect the Prince-Archbishopric. With a built-up area of over 30,000 square meters, it is considered one of the largest and best-preserved 11th-century fortifications in Europe. The fortress was steadily expanded over the centuries, particularly under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach around 1500, who developed the magnificent Golden Chamber. Notably, the Golden Room features intricate carvings and gold gilding. A technical curiosity is the "Salzburg Bull" (Salzburger Stier), a mechanical organ dating to 1502. Throughout its history, the fortress was never taken by foreign troops. Today, it is one of Austria's most visited sights, offering panoramic views over the Alpine city.
