The city was founded on April 4, 1823, as a military outpost named Fuerte Independencia by General Martín Rodríguez. Tandil gained worldwide fame for the Piedra Movediza, a massive balancing stone that remained perched on a hilltop until it fell in 1912. Today, the city is a thriving hub for agriculture, granite mining, and a growing tourism sector.
