Founded in 1881, Necochea operates a major deep-water port, Puerto Quequén, situated right at the mouth of the Quequén Grande River. The city is highly regarded for its expansive sandy beaches, which stretch for over 70 kilometers and reach an impressive width of up to 300 meters, ensuring they rarely feel crowded. Immediately south of the urban center lies the Miguel Lillo Park, a massive 640-hectare planted coniferous forest that provides a natural barrier against the coast and has miles of shaded walking and cycling trails. The cityscape is defined by a massive suspension bridge that spans the river, connecting Necochea with the neighboring town of Quequén. Thanks to the steady and strong coastal winds, this area has become one of the premier destinations in Argentina for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. The local economy is a robust mix of agricultural export from the port and seasonal summer tourism.
