Pryluky is a historic city in the Chernihiv Oblast of northern Ukraine, situated on the Udai River. First mentioned in 1085 by Vladimir Monomakh, the city originally served as a vital fortress of the Kievan Rus against nomadic incursions. During the Cossack era in the 17th and 18th centuries, Pryluky flourished as a significant administrative and military center, serving as the seat of the Pryluky Regiment. The city is renowned for its architectural landmarks, including the early 18th-century Transfiguration Cathedral and St. Nicholas Church. In the 19th century, Pryluky transitioned into an industrial hub, particularly through the establishment of the tobacco industry, which remains a cornerstone of the local economy. The arrival of the railway in 1894 further accelerated its economic growth. Today, Pryluky balances its rich historical heritage with modern industrial activity, notably housing a large factory for British American Tobacco. The city preserves its cultural identity through various museums and monuments that honor its past as a frontier stronghold and a prominent Cossack center.
