Konotop is a historically significant city in the Sumy Oblast of northeastern Ukraine, first recorded in written sources in 1634. The city gained historical renown for the Battle of Konotop in 1659, where a coalition of Ukrainian Cossacks, Poles, and Crimean Tatars achieved a major victory over the Russian army. Geographically, it is situated on the banks of the Yezuch River within a forested lowland region. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway transformed Konotop into a critical transportation hub, leading to the establishment of extensive locomotive and wagon repair workshops. This industrial legacy persists today in the city's mechanical engineering and food processing sectors. Konotop is also famous for its unique tramway system, one of the smallest in Ukraine, which remains a symbol of local identity. Culturally, the city is immortalized in Ukrainian literature through Hryhoriy Kvitka-Osnovyanenko's classic tale 'The Witch of Konotop,' which draws on local legends.
