Shostka is a major industrial city in northern Sumy Oblast, Ukraine, with a history deeply intertwined with military and chemical manufacturing. The city was founded in 1739 alongside the establishment of a gunpowder factory on the Shostka River, intended to supply the Russian military during the Russo-Turkish Wars. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Shostka evolved into one of the preeminent centers for explosives and munitions production in both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The city achieved global recognition after World War II as the home of the 'Svema' chemical plant, which manufactured the vast majority of cinema and photographic film for the Eastern Bloc until the early 1990s. Geographically, it is located in the historic Severia region, surrounded by extensive forests. Today, alongside its chemical heritage, the city's economy is supported by mechanical engineering and food production. Shostka also features a specialized technical museum that preserves the region's unique industrial legacy.
