Cherkasy is a significant regional center in central Ukraine, situated on the right bank of the Dnieper River along the expansive Kremenchuk Reservoir. Established in the 13th century, the city grew into a major stronghold for the Ukrainian Cossacks by the 14th and 15th centuries, playing a crucial role in defending the southern borders. Cherkasy was a focal point during the Cossack uprisings led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, cementing its place in the nation's historical identity. The city's modern layout is distinguished by wide, straight boulevards and a grid-like street system designed by the Scottish architect William Hastie in the 19th century. Key landmarks include the Hill of Glory memorial complex, which features a panoramic view of the reservoir, and the Shcherbina Mansion, an elegant example of Art Nouveau architecture. Economically, Cherkasy is a powerhouse of the chemical industry, machinery manufacturing, and food production. Its river port is one of the busiest on the Dnieper, facilitating trade across the country. The city is also home to the 'White Lotus' Buddhist Temple, the largest of its kind in Europe, highlighting the city's diverse cultural and spiritual landscape.
