Kropyvnytskyi, known as Kirovohrad until 2016, is located in the geographical center of Ukraine on the Inhul River. The city was founded in 1754 as the Fortress of Saint Elizabeth to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire against Crimean Tatar raids. In the 19th century, it developed into a prosperous trade center and is now celebrated as the cradle of professional Ukrainian theater, with the first Ukrainian professional theater troupe established here in 1882. The downtown architecture features elegant buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Economically, Kropyvnytskyi is a major hub for agricultural machinery manufacturing and the food industry, surrounded by fertile black soil regions. The city has undergone several name changes and has been named after the playwright Marko Kropyvnytskyi since 2016. In addition to its cultural significance, the city is a key transportation node and home to the State Flight Academy of Ukraine.
