Kamianske, known as Dniprodzerzhynsk until 2016, is a major industrial city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, located on the right bank of the Dnieper River. Founded in the 18th century by Zaporozhian Cossacks, it experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century as a center for metallurgy. The massive iron and steel works established in 1889 remains the backbone of the city's economy and is one of the largest in the country. During the Soviet era, the city underwent significant expansion, becoming a critical hub for the defense and chemical industries. Kamianske is also famous as the birthplace of Leonid Brezhnev, who led the Soviet Union for nearly twenty years. Despite its heavy industrial focus, the city features cultural institutions like the Music and Drama Theater and scenic parks along the Dnieper reservoir. In recent years, the city has been working to modernize its heavy industry while addressing environmental concerns.
