Kremenchuk is a major industrial and port city in the Poltava Oblast, strategically located on both banks of the Dnieper River. Founded in 1571, the city originally served as a fortress to protect against Tatar raids. In the 19th century, it evolved into a significant trading center for grain and timber due to its advantageous riverside location. During World War II, Kremenchuk was almost entirely destroyed but was rebuilt in the post-war period as a massive industrial hub. Today, it is well-known for its oil refinery, one of the largest in Ukraine, as well as the production of heavy trucks (KrAZ) and railway cars. The city's two halves are connected by the famous Kriukiv Bridge, a notable engineering feat. Despite its heavy industrial focus, the city gives expansive parks and beaches along the river that serve as popular recreation areas for residents.
