Pereiaslav is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Ukraine, located in the Kyiv Oblast. The city was first mentioned in 907 in the treaty between Kievan Rus' and the Byzantine Empire. It gained immense historical prominence during the Council of Pereiaslav in 1654, where Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky signed an alliance with the Tsardom of Russia, a move that permanently altered the political landscape of Eastern Europe. Today, Pereiaslav is known as the 'City of Museums,' housing over 20 different museum facilities, including the expansive Open-Air Museum of Folk Architecture and Life. The city preserves numerous architectural landmarks from the Kievan Rus' era and the Ukrainian Baroque period, such as the Ascension Monastery built in 1700. Due to its cultural treasures and well-preserved historic layout, the city is a vital center for tourism and historical research. Between 1943 and 2019, the city was officially called Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi before reverting to its historical name.
